ABSTRACT

ObjectiveTo explore the effect of mint juice on the nitrite content in pickled cabbage, and to determine the best concentration of mint juice through comprehensive sensory evaluation. MethodsThe control variates method was used to conduct this single factor experiment. The pickled cabbage processing was divided into five groups, one control group CK, and four experimental groups, Lp100, Lp80, Lp60, Lp40, respectively. The data were analyzed by using test of normality, homogeneity of variance test, ANOVA and multiple comparisons. ResultsThe content of nitrite in the experimental group with mint juice was much lower than that in the control group. During each day, as the concentration of mint juice increased, the removal efficiency also increased and the nitrite content in pickled cabbage decreased, too. When the concentration of mint juice was 100%, the nitrite content in pickled cabbage remained the lowest during 1-5 days of fermentation. On the fifth day of fermentation, the removal efficiency of nitrite in pickled cabbage by mint juice with 100% concentration reached the highest (49.55%). Adding 60% mint juice to pickled cabbage showed the highest score of 92 in sensory evaluation. ConclusionMint juice can reduce the nitrite content in pickled cabbage and make pickled cabbage a better flavor. Result indicates that 60% mint juice is the best concentration for a comprehensive effect.

ABSTRACT

Antioxidants are used to preserve food by delaying deterioration, rancidity and discoloration caused by oxidation. Antioxidants can be either synthetic or natural; however, due to the possibility of carcinogenic and mutagenic effects, there has been an increasing search for the use of natural antioxidants. Mechanically separated meat (MSM) originates from the meat processing, being formed by the back, neck and the deboning process of poultry, and the subsequent processing of the meat to form the cuts. The Brazilian legislation recommends a maximum of 30% of MSM in the production of hamburgers, demonstrating the possibility of its use in a product with greater commercial value. Moreover, since this is an extremely processed meat, it is more prone to oxidation, requiring the use of antioxidants to increase shelf life. Thus, research is needed to evaluate the use of natural antioxidants such as essential oils. In recent research developed by this research group, the production of hamburgers made with MSM from poultry and the addition of mint or oregano essential oil as antioxidant at different levels (0.04, 0.06, and 0.08%), with prior results showing good acceptability in the preference test for all the levels used. However, the antioxidant capacity assessment and microbiological analysis must be evaluated in order to determine the optimal usage level of oregano or mint essential oils as natural antioxidants in products made with poultry MSM.(AU)

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE:To study the resistance effect of LaCl3 on different varieties of mint under saline-alkali stress with dif-ferent concentrations, and provide theoretical and experimental basis for its planting. METHODS:NaCl saline stress and NaHCO3 alkali stress with low, medium, high concentrations(25,50,100 mmol/L)were conducted for 4 kinds of mint [Mentha haploca-lyx Briq.,Mentha spicata Linn.,Monarda didyma L.,Mentha rotundifolia (Linn.)huds]. Growth indexes (survival rate, plant height, fresh weight and dry weight)were determined, and mint species with good resistance were screened. The effect mechanism of La3+ on growth indexes in saline-alkali stress with different concentrations, osmotic regulation indexes [soluble sugar(SS),solu-ble protein (SP), proline (Pro)], antioxidant activity indexes [superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT)],the yield of volatile oil,and resistance were determined. RESULTS:After saline-alkali stress,M. didyma and M. rotundi-folia had low survival rate, which were not suitable for growth under given climatic conditions. For M. haplocalyx and M. spicata, saline-alkali stress with low concentration can significantly increase the growth indexes under no artificial intervention. La3+ can sig-nificantly increase the yield and CAT activity under no stress. Compared with non-spraying La3+group,the SOD,CAT,POD activi-ties of mint added La3+ under saline stress with low, medium, high concentrations, plant height and fresh weight under alkali stress with high concentration,SOD activity and SS content under alkali stress with medium, high concentrations, and POD activity un-der alkali stress with medium concentration were significantly increased. CONCLUSIONS:Spraying La3+ can significantly improve the growth of M. haplocalyx and M. spicata under alkalized soil with medium, high concentrations. Mentha haplocalyx Briq. is se-lected as the mint specy with the best saline-alkali resistance.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT It is known the fact that the mining causes huge damages on the environment having negative biologic effects extremely severe on some groups of organisms of the food chain. The pollutants causes major damages at the level of leaves' cuticles, the vegetation reacting through irreversible modifications at the tissue's level and at substances and energy metabolism, like a riposte to the apparition of the stress induced by the ROS, stress that creates real disturbances on physiological and biochemical processes. Considering the fact that, on the one hand, the activity of oxidoreductases is strongly influenced by the presence of the pollutants factors, with direct effect on the oxidative's stress production, and on the other hand that the plants react at ROS accumulation, through self-protection and adaptability mechanisms, the aim of this study consisted in monitoring the activity of some oxidoreductases in the leaves of plantain and mint species harvested in 2015 from different mining areas of Suceava County. In parallel was determined the dehydrogenase activity of the soil, the samples being collected from the same areas subdued to anthropic pollution, using like reference swatch, samples from Putna. The obtained results signalize the accumulation of some quantities highly arisen by free radicals of oxygen at investigated species, the enzymatic activity being significantly higher in the mining plant comparatively to the control areal. The microbial dehydrogenases from the soil samples were remarked through different activities based on the types of heavy metals that pollute each harvesting area and on the deepness profile.

ABSTRACT

Use of natural products like floral preservative has contributed to reduce indiscriminate use of chemical products. Therefore, this research tested solutions to keep quality and to increase commercial durability of 'Vega' cv. cut roses. It was used a casual design in a factorial schema composed by six post harvest treatments and four evaluation dates. The following treatments were conducted: 1) Distilled water; 2) Metil jasmonate (350µM) application in pulsing form for four hours; 3) Metil jasmonate (500µM) spraying; 4) Mint oil (100ppm); 5) Ginger oil (100ppm); and 6) Propolis (0.05%) used as a maintenance solution. Flowers stayed in an environment at 20±2°C and 67±3% RH. Physiological and qualitative evaluations were conducted. Generally speaking, natural products presented a beneficial action over the shelf life of flowers. However, metil jasmonate spraying was, in all evaluated parameters, the most efficient product to maintain floral quality, providing a lower fresh mass loss and a lower respiratory rate of flowers. It also permitted improvement in coloration maintenance, water relative content and reducing sugars.

ABSTRACT

The genus Mentha is cultivated worldwide for essential oil production, with emphasis on its major constituent, menthol, which is used in the pharmaceutical, cosmetics, and food industries and for personal care. This work investigates the use of different propagation structures and harvesting times of Mentha canadensis L., in the Santa Catarina State north coast. The experimental design was in randomized blocks in a 4X2 factorial, comparing four propagation structures (stolon with 10, 15 and 20 cm and stem cuttings with 5 cm) and two harvesting times (95 days after planting and 60 days after the regrowth). In each harvesting time, the vegetative growth, essential oil and menthol productivities were evaluated. The first harvest showed greater leaf, branch and total dry mass accumulation, and essential oil and menthol productivities when stem cuttings were used. In the second harvest, no differences were observed for all evaluated variables. The first harvest resulted in higher averages than the second harvest, with exception in all variables for the use of stolon with 10 cm and in stem dry mass for stolon with 20 cm. The major constituents of the essential oil were menthol, menthone, neomenthol. The levels of menthol were significantly higher in the second harvest and of menthone in the first harvest, while neomenthol showed no significant difference. The results suggest that early harvest of the regrowth results in great menthol concentrations in the essential oil. The use of stolons as a propagation structure can be considered a viable alternative for mint, as it provides similar levels of essential oil and menthol productions after the second harvest, when compared to stem cuttings and also reduces the production cost.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to verify the development and the nutritional status of Mentha spicata x suaveolens cultivated under different Ca2+ levels in nutrient solution with application of plant growth regulators. The experiment was in factorial design (4X4) with four Ca2+ levels in the nutrient solution (160, 120, 80 and 40 mg L-1) and three leaf applications, at 15-day intervals, of naphthalene acetic acid (NAA), gibberellic acid (GA3), benzyladenine (BA) and distilled water as control. Plants were harvested at 60 days after transferring to the nutrient solution and the following variables were evaluated fresh and dried matter, leaf area, number of leaves, volume, length and surface of roots, and leaf content of Ca, K, Mg, N and P. The variables were subjected to analysis of variance and means compared by Tukey's test. There were no differences between Ca levels for biomass production. The auxin did not influence the dry matter of plants although it increased the leaf content of Ca2+, the cytokinin reduced total dry matter and the gibberellin increased the stem dry matter. The change in Ca2+ did not influence the leaf content of N, P, K and Mg. There was response for the application of Ca2+, reaching the maximum of 15.73 mg L-1 leaf content at the level of 137.81 mg L-1, according to regression analysis

ABSTRACT

Preeclampsia, a hypertensive pregnancy-specific disorder, has long been analyzed for its association with cellular stress. It still remains one of the most serious complications of pregnancy. It is a multi-system disorder that affects maternal vascular function and fetal growth. The physiopathology of preeclampsia is still unclear, but an imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidants, appears to be an important contributing factor. Oxidative stress has been increasingly postulated as a major contributor to endothelial dysfunction in preeclampsia (PE). The ROS promotes lipid oxidation and are known to induce stress proteins, such as hemeoxygenase 1 (HO-1) and heat-shock protein 70 (HSP70). Embryonic and placental cells are highly sensitive to oxidative stress due to their proliferate nature. Endothelial cell dysfunction is suggested to be a part of wider maternal inflammatory reaction responsible for the clinical syndrome of preeclampsia. Part of the dysfunction in endothelial cell and trophoblast is attributed to oxidative stress developed during pregnancy. The disequilibrium in compensatory antioxidant control is proposed as a causative mechanism in the pathophysiology of preeclampsia. HSP70 acts as the secondary line of defense in systems with compromised antioxidant function. This article reviews the differential expression of HSP70 and the effect of mint-tea therapy to modulate preeclamptic oxidative damage.

ABSTRACT

Mentha x gracilis Sole is a hybrid that produces essential oils rich in monoterpenes. Aimed at the clonal propagation of this plant, nodal segments from aseptic plants were cultured in Murashige and Skoog (MSO) medium supplemented with 0; 0.5; 1.0 and 2.0 µM kinetin, benzyl adenine (BAP) or thidiazuron (TDZ). After 30 days, plants were transferred to MOS medium without cytokinin supplementation. The best results were obtained in medium supplemented with 2 µM TDZ, which proved to be a viable method for the rapid production of a large number of seedlings. After transference to the greenhouse, plants propagated with TDZ had a larger number of glandular trichomes.

ABSTRACT

Essential oil production in aromatic plants is influenced by biotic and abiotic factors. The demand for these products has increased, and essential oils from the genus Mentha have been of great interest for pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food and agronomic industries, especially because of the compound menthol. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of three row spaces (0.60 x 0.15 m; 0.60 x 0.30 m and 0.60 x 0.45 m) and two harvest times (60 and 90 days after planting) on the species Mentha campestris Schur. The experiment was carried out at Canguiri Experimental Stations-UFPR, in Pinhais, Paraná State , Brazil, between January and April 2008. The experimental design was in randomized blocks in split-plot. There was significant difference for all variables. In the second harvest time, leaf, branch and total dry yields were higher than those in the first time. For leaf dry mass, the highest values were observed in the narrowest space. Essential oil yield was higher in the second harvest and in wider rows. Essential oil productivity was also higher in the second harvest time, but in the narrowest row. The space 0.60 x 0.15 m and harvest at 90 days can be recommended due to their higher biomass, essential oil yield and menthol productivity per hectare.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of aqueous extracts of Melissa officinallis and Mentha x villosa for the germination and vigor of Plantago major seeds. The experiment was conducted at the Plant Science Department, Federal University of Viçosa, in April 2011. The design was a completely randomized design with five treatments (control, 25 percent, 50 percent, 75 percent and 100 percent of the aqueous extract of Mentha x villosa and Melissa Officinallis) and four replications. The extracts were prepared utulizando the shoots of plants at the rate of 100g of plant to 1 L of distilled water. We used 50 Plantago major seeds in each box incubator and these were subsequently placed in a germination chamber. 14 days during the counting of germinated seeds per day to calculate the index of germination speed and the end of 14 days was the germination percentage. Plantago major seeds not subjected to aqueous extracts of lemon balm and mint showed higher values in the variables studied when compared to other concentrations, showing the allelopathic potencial of Melissa officinallis and Mentha x villosa on the development of plantain, determined by germinating.

ABSTRACT

Currently, it has been of great interest to study the anthelmintic activity of medicinal plants in ruminants. Mentha villosa Huds. (Lamiaceae) is one of the mint species that has been popularly used based on various medicinal properties, even for the control of nematode infections. This study aimed to test the anthelmintic activity of hidrolact of this plant, both in vitro, by the quantitative coproculture method, and in vivo, in calves infected with gastrointestinal nematodes, through the egg count reduction test in feces of the hosts. In in vitro tests, the hidrolact at the concentrations 40 percent, 60 percent and 80 percent and 100 percent obtained percentage of effectiveness of 91.88 percent, 94.15 percent, 98.40 percent and 100 percent respectively, showing significant ovicidal activity against gastrointestinal nematodes in calves. However, the hidrolact of M. villosa showed no in vivo anthelmintic activity at 0.1ml kg-1 day-1 on the treated animals.

ABSTRACT

The influence of potassium on the development of Mentha piperita L. was evaluated in the plants grown in nutritive solution modified by variations in potassium, at 6.0, 3.0, and 1.5 mmol L-1, establishing differences between treatments and corresponding, respectively, to the concentration proposed in Hoagland and Arnon's no. 2 solution and reductions by 50 percent and 75 percent. Until 21 days after transplanting, the concentration used was diluted to 50 percent in the three treatments. Evaluations consisted of leaf area, development of the above-ground part, and dry matter of different plant organs. Plants grown with 1.5/3.0 mmol L-1 K showed greater development of the above-ground part. Other variables were not different among plants in the different treatments.

ABSTRACT

The hypermethylation of the CpG islands is a common mechanism for the inactivation of tumor-related genes. In the present study, we analyzed the methylation status of genes for cell repair such as hMLH1, MGMT, and GSTP1, and a gastric cancer-specifically methylated DNA fragment, MINT 25 in gastric cancer cases and control groups. The study population consisted of 100 gastric cancer patients (50 distal and 50 proximal carcinomas), and 238 healthy controls. All genes showed more frequent hypermethylation in the cases than in the control group (p<0.0001). We investigated the association between promoter hypermethylation and relevant parameters including age, gender, alcohol consumption, smoking, and family history. There was a common hypermethylation of hMLH1 (p=0.008), MGMT (p= 0.0001), and GSTP1 (p=0.0003) in females. This study also demonstrates that hypermethylation was strongly associated with non-drinkers (MGMT, p=0.046 and MINT 25, p=0.049) and non-smokers (hMLH1, p=0.044; MGMT, p=0.0003; MINT 25, p=0.029). Moreover, the frequency of MINT 25 hypermethylation increased with age (p=0.037), and MGMT methylation was frequently detected in distal gastric cancer than in proximal type (p=0.038). Our study suggested that promoter hypermethylation of the genes involved in cell repair system and MINT 25 is associated strongly with some subgroups of primary gastric carcinoma.

ABSTRACT

There are few reports on aggravation of asthma by mint flavor although it is a common ingredient of many products. A 40-year-old male patient with aspirin-sensitive asthma experienced anaphylaxis after using a gargle that contained mint flavor. Skin prick tests and ELISA for serum specific IgE to mint showed negative responses. Challenge tests with mint oil and menthol were positive and the immediate bronchoconstriction was completely inhibited by premedication with cromolyn sodium. These findings suggest that mast cells may be involved in the pathogenesis of mint-induced asthma or anaphylaxis. To our knowledge, this is the first case of mint-induced anaphylaxis. It is important to alert physicians to the possibility of aggravation of asthmatic symptoms or the development of anaphylaxis by mint flavor.
